The Delta State Police Command has launched a statewide enforcement operation targeting unregistered, undocumented and plate-less vehicles to improve road safety and strengthen security across the state.
Code-named Operation VELVET, the exercise began on Tuesday in compliance with a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
The operation targets vehicles without valid documents or registration, those without number plates, and vehicles bearing defaced, obscured, altered or deliberately covered plates.
The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Samuel Etaifo Erale, flagged off the operation in Asaba as the exercise commenced simultaneously across the command’s nine Area Commands and police divisions.
In Asaba, 10 vehicles were cited for traffic violations and taken before a mobile court, where proceedings are ongoing.
Addressing journalists at the flag-off, Erale urged motorists and vehicle owners to keep their vehicles properly documented and ensure that approved number plates are clearly displayed.
He directed officers deployed for the operation to remain firm, civil and professional, warning that extortion, harassment and other misconduct would not be tolerated.
Erale also urged motorists to cooperate with the police, assuring residents that the enforcement would be conducted professionally and in accordance with the law.
According to him, the operation will enhance vehicle identification, deter criminals from using improperly identified vehicles and improve road safety and security across Delta State.
