History will gave it recorded as the Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah today been Monday 5th June, 2023 visited some markets in the state to monitor people’s compliance with his ban on sit-at-home order.
The Forward News had earlier on Sunday reported that Governor Mbah threatened to close schools, markets and transport units that failed to open for business and academic activities on Monday henceforth.
The governor had issued the threats in a Public Service Announcement made available to journalists on Saturday night, adding that the directive was sequel to his recent ban/cancellation of Mondays’ sit-at-home in all nooks and crannies of the state starting from Monday, June 5, 2023.
However, on Monday morning, The Forward News reported that residents of Enugu city, the State capital and its environs reinforced the Monday sit-at-home despite the state government’s ban on the “illegal sit-at-home.Observed that residents instead reinforced the sit-at-home exercise.
For instance, visits to Holy Ghost, Old Park, Garrik, Emene, Eke-Obinagu, Abakpa and Zik Avenue showed that unlike previous Mondays in recent months when some people came out to open their businesses early; this time, roads were totally deserted.
Schools within the city centre and on the outskirts of the state capital were shut while filling stations were also closed. At the Holy Ghost area where there are lots of motor parks, the story was the same. All transport companies in the area totally their businesses. At Old Orie Emene, commuters deserted the roads. Also, Enugu-Abakaliki Road which is almost ever busy, was deserted. For 30 minutes, The Forward News Correspondences observed that no single vehicle passed the road.
However, there were a few buses and tricycle operators on roads inside communities but there were no passengers to carry. Some private vehicles were also seen plying the roads.
But attached with photos and a video of his visit to some parts of the to monitor compliance with the government order against the Monday sit-at-home, Governor Mbah on his Twitter handle said, “Today, I went round Enugu metropolis to urge our people to come out and go about their various businesses.
“Ndi Enugu will not continue to sit at home on Monday, the first working day of the week. We should not encourage the crippling of our economy but must work to ensure it is revived.”
